The Pinot noir Cultural and Ethnographic Centre

The Pinot noir Cultural and Ethnographic Centre collects, stores and disseminates knowledge on the typical wine production traditions of Oltrepò Pavese. The Centre aims to become a reference point as a centre for documentation and cultural promotion.

The Centre is a place where stories about Pinot noir can be listened to and read about. Not only users are invited to discover the local wine growing traditions, they are also remembered that Pinot noir has an international breadth, being cultivated all around the world.

The Centre preserves and promotes tangible and non-tangible cultural heritage. Its inclusiveness regard both local communities and visitors, of different ages and backgrounds, alike.

Scientific Documentation

The Centre makes use of advanced technologies to complement the storage and communication of information to users and local cultural partners. It also provides access to relevant data archives.

It interacts with organisations dedicated to the study and promotion of Pinot noir on a global scale.

The Centre fosters dissemination and outreach programmes. Contents are mainly scientific, cultural and social: they focus on the Oltrepò Pavese and Pinot noir positions in Italy and abroad.

The website includes additional content provided by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Piacenza campus) regarding Pinot noir:

  1. local bibliography
  2. international bibliography

Cataloguing

The Pinot noir Cultural and Ethnographic Centre’s written materials will be published on the Catalogo Unico Pavese, the open-access, online catalogue, managed by the University of Pavia, which includes sources from 130 libraries in the province. Such initiative will allow anyone interested to learn more about the Centre’s rich bibliographic collections.

Bibliography

The Centre has commissioned the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Piacenza campus) to undertake research on the history and traditions about Pinot noir. Results and related bibliographic sources will implement the already existing records.

In this section, it is possible to access the proceedings of previous conferences organised in Oltrepò Pavese during the 1980s and 1990s.

Some publications may be of interest to wine lovers, too, not only experts or scholars!

We truly believe that wine is more than a drink. It is something alive, it connects us with history and nature. It helps us to understand how we can make the most of life and beauty through systematic study and knowledge.

Additional publications can represent an important asset for experts in the wine production sector to improve technical skills.

From the study of materials possessed, several aspects of past viticulture in Oltrepò Pavese are now well-known. They offer us a picture on how they evolved over time.

They include the various Pinot noir clones, their specificities and the geographic areas in which they are cultivated. The effects of soil, altitude, exposure, the most appropriate affinities with the clone type and, subsequently, with the desired wine to be produced, are reported. Nutritional and phytosanitary facts are listed, too.

For an easier consultation of the digital library, extracts are offered below. We would suggest you to start with the “type of document” label first.
